The Zinc Die Casting Process Explained

The furnace may be a holding furnace meaning that it can not melt metal so liquid metal is supplied to the furnace or it may be a melting & holding zinc furnace that is designed to melt zinc. Either type may be electrically heated or heated via natural gas, propane or other fossil fuel. The furnace is designed to be integral to the zinc die casting machine. The main components of the injection system are: Injection Cylinder, Plunger, Piston, Gooseneck and Nozzle. At the beginning of the cycle the piston moves upwards which allows molten metal to be drawn into gooseneck through a port. Next the die closes sealing the part cavities in the die, then the plunger moves downwards, it covers or seals the port and forces the molten metal through the gooseneck and nozzle into the die filling the cavities with molten zinc. Once the metal solidifies the die opens, the casting is ejected from the machine, the die is sprayed with die release lubricant to keep the next set of parts from sticking to the die and then the process repeats.

Advantages of the zinc die casting process

The major advantage the zinc die casting process is very short cycle times. Especially in the Zinc and Zinc alloys very complex parts can be cast requiring little or no secondary operations. As an example, both internal and external threads can be cast directly onto the part during the casting operation. Extremely fast cycle times can be achieved with the zinc die casting process, up to 1,200 cycles per hour. In the hot chamber die casting process the chill time (time required for the metal to solidify) has a significant impact on the number of cycles per hour. Zinc machines are typically fully automatic often times allowing one worker to tend as many as six die casting machines.
