The Injected Metal Assembly (IMA) Die Casting Process Explained
Injected Metal Assembly is the manufacturing process in which the two or more small parts are placed inside of a die set often by using vibratory bowl feeders. Once the pieces are in place in the die cast, liquid metal is injected in the area where the parts meet. Once the liquid metal solidifies (freezes) the parts are permanently attached to each other completing the assembly process. The injection system is partially immersed in a bath of molten metal contained in a furnace; the furnace is integral to the machine. The main components of the injection system are: Injection Cylinder, Plunger, Piston, Gooseneck and Nozzle. At the beginning of the cycle the piston moves upwards which allows molten metal to be drawn into gooseneck through a port. Next the dies closes sealing the cavity where the parts are located. Then the injection process takes place. The design of the dies for the IMA die casting process is what makes the die casting machines unique from traditional die casting machines.
Cable Ends or Cable Termination (IMA) Die Casting Process Explained
A sub-set of the Injected Metal Assembly process is the Cable End or Cable Termination casting process. In this IMA process control cables, usually stranded wire cables have the desired ends applied to the cable using the IMA process. This allows for cable ends or cable terminations to have virtually any desired shape. A general overview of this process is that that cable is cut-to-length, the end of the cable is typically "upset" or "birdcaged" allowing for greater surface area for the cast material to adhere to. Once upset the cable in is placed automatically into the die set, the die closes, metal is injected around the upset cable end, the metal solidifies and the die opens and the cable end is ejected from the die.
Advantages of the Injected Metal Assembly process
The major advantage of the IMA die casting process is that the process has extremely short cycle times and the ability to assembly small complex parts with minimal operator supervision.
IMA die casting machines vary in price depending on size, manufacturer and features. The new price of machines can range from less than $50,000.00 to more than $300,000.00.
