How does a Cold Chamber Magnesium Die Casting Machine work?

Cold chamber Magnesium die cast machines are used for magnesium alloys. Magnesium when in the liquid form is highly flammable. Because of this the magnesium material must be handled differently than with aluminum. Generally a shielding gas is used to protect the liquid magnesium from the oxygen in the atmosphere. Deprived from oxygen the magnesium can not burn. The cold chamber magnesium high pressure die casting machine work very much like the traditional cold chamber machine except that generally speaking magnesium requires a more robust shot system (injection system). As liquid magnesium cools very rapidly during the casting process the injection system is usually much faster on magnesium machines. The speed of the injection system is measured in either inches per second (IPS) or meters per second (m/s). Typically, a cold chamber aluminum casting might require and injection speed of 200 inches per second (5 meters per second) but the same part in magnesium my require 350 inches per second (8.89 meters per second). Generally speaking a magnesium die casting machine can run aluminum, but and aluminum machine may not have the necessary speed to run magnesium.
