What is Shot Blasting?

Shot blasting is a manufacturing process used to provide a desirable surface finish on a part. This finish may be for the purposes of cleaning the part which will be followed by painting giving the paint a clean textured surface for the paint to adhere to or it may be a cosmetic finish that is not painted or treated after blasting. Sometimes shot blasting is used to peen (peening) parts to strengthen a part or to remove mechanical stress from a part. Shot blasting is used in almost every industry that uses metal, including casting, forging, automotive, fabricated steel construction like building, bridges and shipbuilding. Abrasive shot blasting is used on both ferrous and non-ferrous materials.

How does it work?

Shot blasting is accomplished by a process known as “Wheel Blasting”. Wheel blasting converts energy from an electric motor into kinetic energy by rotating an impeller wheel. The impeller is spun by the electric motor, abrasive shot media is feed to the impeller in metered amounts (flow control). The shot blast media is accelerated as it passes though the impeller and centrifugal force forces the media out and towards the parts to be blasted. Multiple wheels are used when necessary so that all surfaces on parts being blasted are fully blasted.
